Panel Discussion at the 2018 Annual Seminar of the Southern African Chapter of the Association for Information Systems (AISSAC)

The theme of the panel is:

Towards a Model for the Africanisation of Information Systems Syllabi.

The panel members are:

  • Prof Jan Kroeze (chair) (lecturer, UNISA)
  • Prof Maureen Tanner (lecturer, UCT)
  • Dr Quentin Williams (research manager, CSIR Meraka Institute)
  • Mr Pitso Tsibolane (lecturer, UCT)
  • Mr Emil van der Poll (PhD student, UNISA)

Each panel member will give a short introduction to an aspect of the theme, followed by a discussion between the audience and panel members. The various aspects to be introduced by the panel members will form some of the basic building blocks of a preliminary framework:

  • A draft model for the Africanisation of IS syllabi – Prof Jan Kroeze
  • Africanisation and the IS honours syllabi – Prof Maureen Tanner
  • How African market needs should inform the IS syllabus – Dr Quentin Williams
  • Being African in an African university: Reflections of an IS Scholar – Mr Pitso Tsibolane
  • Africanisation of undergraduate and postgraduate IS syllabi – Mr Emil van der Poll

During the discussion, these topics will be explored in more depth. We welcome inputs from the audience on related topics such as:

  • Africanisation of undergraduate and postgraduate IS syllabi (e.g. taught master’s courses)
  • Africanisation of master’s and doctoral supervision in IS research
  • Africanisation of community engagement endeavours related to IS tuition and postgraduate research
  • Africanisation of academic citizenship endeavours related to IS tuition and postgraduate research
